3 Easy Sewing Projects for Children

Seeing my first-time sewing students’ energy in the class on the first day is wonderful. Their excitement about learning to sew comes from the creative possibilities it will open up. Sewing machines are often feared, tempering this excitement. So that they can become familiar with using a sewing machine, we encourage them to do some simple sewing projects for children. You can also learn a lot about basic sewing skills through it. Simple, quick, and using little fabric, our team at SewingWithEase prepared these projects that are pretty easy to complete.

Sewing Projects for Children

If you are looking for children’s sewing projects, this article is just for you! Here we have listed some fantastic ideas for kids’ sewing projects. These projects can be done by any age group. So let’s get started with our list of awesome sewing projects for kids.

Project 1 – Expandable Headband

The first project we will be working on is an expandable headband. The versatility of a headband makes it a great sewing project for children. Fabric scraps from another sewing project or repurposed fabric from a used garment can be used for this project since small amounts of fabric are required.

Here is what you will need:

  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Safety pin
  • Needle and Thread (sewing machine)
  • Fabric – 1st piece 10.5 inches by 3.25 inches and the 2nd piece 18 inches by 6 inches.
  • 1 width inch Elastic 7.5 inches.
  1. Sew 12.8 inches from the raw edge of the 10.5 X 3.25-inch fabric by folding it in half lengthwise. Turn the inside out and trim the seam allowance.
  2. Using a safety pin, incorporate the elastic into the fabric one end at a time. Next, pin each end and sew 12.5 inches in from each. Because the fabric is longer than the elastic, it will be slightly ruffled.
  3. The second fabric (18 X 6 inches) should be folded over 12 inches on each end and pressed. Sew 12 inches from the folded ends after folding in half lengthwise right sides together. Turn the garment inside out and trim the seam allowance.
  4. The elasticated fabric tube should be inserted into the large fabric tube. Each end of the larger tube should be folded over the elasticated part and pinned. Sew 12 inches into the folds to hold them in place.

Consider using contrasting patterns or colors for each piece of fabric in this project.

Project 2 – Scrunchie

A brightly colored scrunchie is the cutest hair accessory ever. The number of them you have can never be too high. When you sew as much as we do, there will always be bags and bags of leftover fabric. The fabric can be turned into a scrunchie by making one. Children will enjoy this sewing project as well.

Here is what you will need:

  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Safety pin
  • Needle and Thread (sewing machine)
  • Fabric cut 18 inches by 3.5 inches, ¼ inch Elastic cut 8 inches.
  1. A 1-inch gap should be left at one end after folding the fabric lengthwise and stitching all the way across with the raw edge 12 inches away.
  2. Sew the seams at each end of the tube together by opening and matching the seams. Using a machine will not be possible because the opening is too narrow.
  3. Reach through the 1-inch gap you left earlier and turn the right side out.
  4. By inserting a safety pin through the tube, ensure the elastic ends meet and overlap. Make sure both ends are stitched together.
  5. Using a hemming stitch, close the gap.

You can adjust the scrunchie’s thickness by increasing or decreasing the fabric width.

Project 3 – Small Drawstring Bag

Bags with drawstrings can be used for a variety of purposes. In addition to carrying my drawing pencils, we use them as a small toiletry bag while traveling. It has even been used as a gift for Christmas and birthdays. In our experience, people love receiving gifts in bags they can reuse in the future. You can make them with any fabric you like, and they are super easy to make. If you would like to increase or decrease the bag’s size, you can scale the fabric measurements below.

Here is what you will need:

  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Safety pin
  • Needle and Thread (sewing machine)
  • Fabric –Cut one piece of fabric 23 inches by 7 inches
  • Ribbon ¼ inch wide – cut 2 pieces 8 inches each
  1. Finish the edges of the fabric by folding them over 14″ and stitching them together.
  2. Leaving a 12-inch gap, sew 3.5 inches from the neatened edge with the right sides together. Continue to sew until the bottom is reached.
  3. The seam allowances should be pressed open after the corners are clipped off.
  4. The top edge should be folded over by 2 inches, and the neatened edge should be sewn around.
  5. The ribbon will need to be threaded through the gap all the way round and back out with a safety pin. After that, tie a knot in the ribbon ends. Then repeat the process on the other side.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you will enjoy these simple projects that do sewing for children fun and easy. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different fabrics. Don’t forget that you can make more than one of each item so you can give it to family and friends as gifts.
